Baby trees need to be protected in the winter just like a small plant. There must be great care taken to protect your young trees from winter winds, frost and ice. New trees must be protected for at least two winters.

By covering the tree and adding mulch the tree’s surrounding soil from frost and help provide moisture for the tree’s root system by retaining water. For the step-by-step process, please look below.

  1. Buy tree wrap from a local home improvement store or nursery.
  2. Wrap your tree’s trunk up to the first branches. Be sure to overlap the layers and secure them with tape or twine. It can then be removed in early spring.
  3. Put a mulch layer of about 4 to 8 inches (10.2 to 20.3 cm) around the tree’s base spread the mulch at least 2 feet (0.61 m) out from the trunk. Do not let it touch the tree’s trunk.
  4.  Newly planted trees do not yet have a root system that is established enough to reach water deep in the ground. So, before the ground freezes make sure to provide enough water, especially at the root ball of newly planted trees in order to keep your tree hydrated.
  5. To keep your trees from animals that may chew on the bark in winter by installing a plastic tree guard or other hardware specifically made for trees around the bottom of your tree and approximately 1 foot (0.3 m) higher than the average snow level.
  6. To stop splitting and breaking from ice buildup and winter storm tie any center branches together loosely with twine, especially those of evergreen trees. When the spring comes don’t forget to prune any damaged branches out to prevent disease and more breakage.

Stump Grinding

After you remove a tree only half of the job is completed, as there is still a stump remaining in the ground. To remove a stump you have two options – you can rent a stump grinder and remove yourself or hire a company like Tarzan Tree Removal to get rid of it for you. The stump grinder is a mechanical power tool that cuts the wood with rotating disks.

Depending on the size of the tree the roots can go deep into the ground and are very difficult to remove, especially if the tree is old. Instead of removing the roots you can grind the stump, which will leave you with a level area. You can then put fertilizer where the tree once was and cover it up.

It is not only fallen trees that require stump grinding. If you have trees that have fallen down after a storm or because they are sick, you will have a stump sticking out of the ground.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding should only be done by a professional, as the machine can be very difficult and dangerous to operate. Not only do you need a professional to operate it, you need someone who is trained to know how to decide how much of the stump needs to be removed.

Tarzan Tree Removal provides tree service for in all five boroughs in New York, along with Westchester county. Our company believes that most of our clients trim a tree for three basic reasons, aesthetics, safety and healthy.

Safety – The most important reason for trimming a tree is to make sure that it does not cause any damage or harm someone. Dead or broken branches and limbs can fall off at any given time time, which is a serious safety hazard. If the branches of a tree obstruct your view while pulling out of the driveway or the street, they should be trimmed immediately. Finally, tree limbs and branches occasionally grow too close to utility lines. In this case you must contact the utility company to handle such issues.

Aesthetics – Pruning a tree the right way will help maintain the desired shape and appearance. However, you shouldn’t try to impose an unnatural shape or size on a tree because it will be very difficult keep up with. Tarzan Tree Removal also provides landscaping services like hand pruning of ornamental trees and shrubs and pruning back woody vines like ivy.

Health –  In certain instances, it may be necessary to remove a tree that is alive if it is interfering with the health and vigor of other trees. Thinning the crown of a tree improves airflow, which can be very beneficial. If branches are crossing or rubbing together, they should be trimmed right away so that they don’t fall out.
